Let me just start off by saying that this cake tutorial is incredibly versatile!
You could create this cake using ANY combination of colors.
You could create this cake using ANY theme. Just switch out whatever decorations you put on top.
Want a superhero cake?
Change the frosting colors to red, blue, and yellow. Add some superhero action figures on the top, and wo-lah! Superhero themed cake!
Want a Christmas themed cake?
Change the frosting colors to red and green. Add some candy canes on top, and wo-lah! Christmas themed cake!
Want a graduation-themed cake?
Change the frosting colors to black and white. Add whatever gold and silver items you can find on top, and wo-lah! Graduation themed cake!
You get the point???
Watch to learn the technique… then differentiate it based on your needs!
I looooove decorating cakes. I love being creative. I love a good challenge. And I love getting to do it with my daughters. It’s a special thing that we always make our own cakes to match whatever theme they pick. It really has blossomed into quite a hobby of ours!
Now, I do have to give a heads up. THIS IS OUR VERY FIRST CAKE TUTORIAL!!!!!!
And to be honest, I wasn’t planning on actually posting it. I was practicing what I needed to do, where we needed to have the camera, etc… basically in hopes that in the future I could actually do a cake tutorial.
But after I uploaded all the footage, I thought – WHY NOT?!?!?
Please do not expect a professional grade video or professional grade photographs. I am not a professional.
I am a mom. I am a mom who likes to bake. I am a mom who likes to bake with her children and often let them help even though I know it might not turn out exactly the way I want it to. I frequently have to remind myself that it’s not about perfection. When my kids want to have a say in the decorating… when my kids ask to have a turn with the piping bag… the control freak in me panics… I take a deep breath… and then I say YES!
I have to remind myself that it’s not about perfection. It’s about the quality time together. It’s about creating a tradition that they’ll remember when they’re older.
One day they’ll say… “I remember when we used to bake all of our birthday cakes with our mom.” That is why I do it.
This video is created with the intention of helping somebody out there.
I get such joy out of baking and decorating cakes, and I hope that someone will benefit and that someone will be inspired. If you are a regular person who doesn’t feel very confident with baking and/or decorating cakes, gain motivation from the fact that I am a regular person too! And we all have to start out somewhere. If you try this cake, and it turns out a disaster, who cares! Surely you’ll learn from the experience and your next one will be even better!
Heads Up Before You Watch the Video:
This video is not videotaped with a professional grade camera. This video is not even videotaped with a tripod. This is your disclosure that you may have motion sickness when you’re done watching it! 😂😂😂
Products I Used:

Wilton Candy Melts, bright white
Wilton Icing Colors, 12-count

Everything used for decor on the top was purchased from Walmart and/or the dollar store. And the Shopkins toys and doll were pulled from my daughter’s bedroom!
A Few Random Tidbits:
After I leveled out all the cake layers, my girls and I nibbled on the rejected parts of cake throughout the entire tutorial!
I have since bought a tripod. I can’t wait to use it to make my second cake tutorial. I’m sure the quality of the video will be leaps and bounds from this very first video I ever made!
Some of our baking inspirations are Nerdy Nummies, So Yummy, and Nailed It! #Iloveyounicolebyer #iloveyoutoowes
**HAPPY BAKING!**
